DENVER -
Hundreds of families signed up for Christmas assistance through the Salvation Army on day one of registration week. Each family will get a food box and gifts for the kids. The Fox 31 and KWGN the Deuce HelpForce is teaming up with the Salvation Army this season.
Last year the program helped about 20,000 people in the metro area. This year the need is expected to be 10% greater.
This week they could get some help. The Salvation Army is registering families for assistance during the holidays. Families who sign up will receive food boxes and gifts for the kids December 17th 23rd.
It will mean a lot to people like Casandra Duran. The 21-year-old has two small children and no job. "I don't have any money to get them anything right now," Duran says.
She is one of thousands of people who say they will register for help this week. Registration runs November 2nd November 7th at six area locations.
"When finances aren't good especially, in this economy it can be very scary for the families facing that. The Salvation Army has always provided help, especially during the holidays," said Captain John Bennett at the Centennial Salvation Army.
His location signed up nearly 80 families in an hour and a half Monday night. Captain Bennett says that's a 50% increase over last year. It means a lot to people like Laura Zaragoza.
"Nobody can get a job in our household," she said. She's hoping to get a few gifts for her baby daughter. "It's her first Christmas and she deserves a good one," Zaragoza said.
